Who Flarewing doesn't work with
Some industries and business models are excluded outright, regardless of budget or how a specific project is framed:
- Fossil fuels and non-clean energy
- Gambling
- Tobacco and vaping
- Alcohol
- Weapons or defence
- Exploitative or extractive business models
- Products or services that cause net harm to people or the planet
- Large corporations built around invasive tracking or data profiting
Sustainable, low-impact technology
Sustainability isn't limited to who Flarewing works with - it also shapes how the work itself gets built:
- Low-carbon hosting
Hosting chosen for low-carbon infrastructure where practical.
- Performance as sustainability
A faster, leaner site uses less energy on every device that loads it.
- Green software practices
Efficient code, no unnecessary third-party scripts, and nothing kept around out of habit.
Our carbon rating, measured not claimed
We have measured our carbon footprint for this site. The home page's transfer weight is run through CO2.js, an open-source implementation of the Sustainable Web Design (SWD) v4 model, which grades a page A+ to F against real-world website percentiles.
- ARating on standard hosting
- 409.4 KBPage weight over the wire
- 0.062gCO2e per page view
This is measured against the actual generated site rather than a third-party tracking script, in keeping with our other sustainability practices. Last measured 2026-09-21.
Reducing reliance on Big Tech
Where practical, Flarewing favours smaller, privacy-respecting European providers over the default Big Tech option - for hosting, analytics, email, and other tooling a project depends on. This isn't about avoiding capable tools; it's about not defaulting to the largest providers when a smaller, values-aligned one does the job just as well.
That same thinking is also why Flarewing built PrivacyTrail - a free tool for discovering privacy-respecting alternatives to mainstream tech, giving people options to find a better replacement for almost any service they rely on.
